From Chicken to Chickpeas: Veganizing Indian Comfort Food

06 March 2026

Why Chickpeas?

Chickpeas (chana) have been a cornerstone of Indian cooking for centuries. They're packed with protein, fibre, and iron — making them one of the best plant-based swaps for chicken in traditional recipes. Unlike many meat alternatives, chickpeas don't need a lab to make. They're whole, unprocessed, and naturally delicious.

Classic Recipes, Reimagined

1. Chickpea Tikka Masala

Swap the chicken for roasted chickpeas in a creamy, spiced tomato sauce. Use coconut cream instead of heavy cream, and you've got a dish that's just as indulgent — minus the dairy.

2. Classic Chana Masala

Already vegan by tradition, this North Indian staple proves that plant-based food has always been part of Indian culture. Slow-cooked with onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, and a punch of amchur (dry mango powder), it's comfort in a bowl.

3. Butter Chickpeas (Murgh Makhani, Hold the Murgh)

Yes, you can veganize butter chicken. Use chickpeas, cashew cream, and a blend of garam masala, fenugreek, and tomato paste. It's creamy, smoky, and completely plant-based.

4. Chickpea Coconut Curry

A South Indian–inspired dish with coconut milk, curry leaves, mustard seeds, and tender chickpeas. Light yet satisfying — and naturally vegan.

Tips for Veganizing Comfort Classics

  • Use full-fat coconut milk for richness.
  • Toast your spices — it makes all the difference.
  • Don't skip the acid — a squeeze of lemon or a dash of amchur brightens everything.
  • Roast your chickpeas before adding them to curries for extra texture.
  • Finish with fresh coriander and a drizzle of vegan yoghurt.

Why This Matters

Veganizing Indian food isn't about giving up tradition — it's about honouring it. India has one of the richest vegetarian and vegan food cultures in the world. Choosing chickpeas over chicken isn't a compromise; it's a celebration.

So next time you're craving comfort, reach for the chickpeas. Your taste buds — and the planet — will thank you.
